Young Farming Champion
Facts we've learned and ideas we've been given, from our amazing young farmer, Josh Gilbert! ( How knowledgabull!)
On Friday our team was very privileged to have an internet hook up with our Young Farming Champion, Josh Gilbert. We asked him many questions, and his responses were incredible (incredibull!). Josh is a young farmer who wants farmers to address the issue of climate change in their farming practices. Already farmers are starting to look at ways of reducing methane gas emissions from their cows. Josh has Braford bred cattle on his farm at Nabiac, NSW. Josh is very respectable (respectabull!). |
Climate Change and the impact on cattle and sheep farmers. What can they do about it?
'Mooving' inspiration was received from Josh in this area, and it is his main interest area!
All farmers depend on the weather for their grass, and crops to feed their animals. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for every farmer, as the reliability of rainfall lessens and temperatures increase. Global change is miserable! (Miserabull) Interesting Climate Change Facts Definition: Climate change is a change in the weather patterns. (FABULOUS- FABULLOUS!) The good news is that a quite a number of school students (66 percent) are actively involved in raising awareness of climate change . Australians civilians emit about 28 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year. UNSPEAKABLE (UNSPEAKABULL!) We can reduce this by such practices as:
Renewable Energy Using renewable energy sources helps to slow down climate change. Farmers are addressing climate change by using renewable energy sources on their farms. On unproductive land, many farmers who are located in windy areas are allowing wind turbines to be built. This helps to power a hungry nation, whilst their productive sections are still used to feed a hungry nation! |
Healthy Communities
Research has shown an average Australian family of two adults and two children, spend about 8 percent more on current diets than would be required to purchase healthy, recommended diets!
About 58 percent of the food budget for the current diets is spent on junk food including take away foods, 14 percent, alcohol, 12 percent and sugary drinks , 4 percent. A sustainable diet has low environmental impact and contributes to food and nutrition security and a healthy life for present and future generations. Josh Gilbert , our Young farming Champion, has informed us that Australian farmers produce enough food to sustain our nation and also into the future, but a lot of food is not used and is wasted, ending up at the tip, which is a totally unsustainable practice! This issue needs to be addressed. Incredibly unsustainable! (Incredibully unsustainabull!) Australia get your act together!!! We don't need to reject food at the supermarkets because it doesn't fit the pretty, or regularly shaped category! We love learning at BCS!! |
